It’s Never Too Late…

I am a very active reader. In the sense where I read all the time and in the sense that I am quite active as I read. I have a multi color underlining and circling code as well as different ways to fold, tare and mark pager for later reference purposes. On top of this I am very good at following directions (as long as they are not coming from my high school math teacher, German teacher, or anyone I have ever dated). Because of this I will usually try whatever the book is telling me to try. (The down side to this is commercials... Commercials for example are designed for people like me. As you may know, I have never owned a TV, however on the occasion I am at a friends house watching it I am a sucker for commercials. If I see a commercial for Pizza... 5 minutes later I am ordering a Pizza. If I see a commercial with chocolate... I am running to the kitchen to find some. If I see a commercial advertising Duritos I am suddenly jonesing for a duritos, and I don't even eat stuff like that or know if I even spelled it right!!!)

What does this have to do with being an active reader? Ill tell you. I am reading a delightful book by Martha Beck called Finding Your North Star. Its full of fun exorcising that I have been loving! One of the pieces of homework from this book gave me a stork of inspiration to start blogging again! THANK YOU MARTHA BECK!!!! Before I tell you my blogging plan, let me tell you how I got there... Somewhere in the book Martha gives the homework to go to a bookstore (which I love going to anyway) and simply walk around and see where and what you are pulled to. Gather a stack of books and bring them over to a corner and take stock of what you have. As you browse you are not supposed look for anything in particular, but rather you are to let your "north star" as Martha calls it, guide you.

I sort of went into a zone as I was walking around. The first book I grabbed I liked the size and colors of the cover. And it had a bike on it that I liked. The second was beautiful and I had to pick it up. The third had a 50's style painting of a women who looked sassy, the 4th I could tell was flash cards and that excited me. The fifth had the face of an actress I love on the cover. With books in arm I found a small patch of carpet and snuggled in to see what I picked up. The first book I grabbed was called "Its Never Too Late... 172 simple acts to change your life" by Patrick Lindsay. The second actually turned out not to be a book at all, but a treasure box that was camouflaged to look like a book. The third was flash cards for nursing school. The fourth was a book of dirty post cards you are supposed to send to x lovers of things you always wanted to tell them. And the last was the Biography of Judy Dench. All around, not so surprising, maybe the dirty postcards, but I could do with a bit more humor in my life.

So, what now to do with these five pieces of insight? I opened up "Its never too late" and discovered that its 172 words of wisdom like, "say what you mean," "make a difference" "be fair," , etc. As soon as I opened this book I knew it was a gem for the world of EKG. I have been struggling with inspiration (and a lack of time) for months on what to blog about and here it is: I am going to do 172 blogs of "Its never too late". Are you with me? Go out and buy the book if you like, or follow along here. If you start doing it too please share what you're doing.

Day 1:

"Its never too late to make plans...

Looking ahead takes you out of the daily grind. Planning ahead brings hope. Small plans first, with realistic goals. Build confidence. Then make bigger plans with bigger goals. Always have plans."

~Patrick Lindsay

"You are young at any age if you are planning for tomorrow." ~Anonymous

So, what am I going to plan? Well, I think I already told you, but Ill say it again. I am going to 172 "Its never too late" things and write about them here, thats it, that is my plan. Let's see how it goes...

Happy & grateful to be along for this journey, Erin. Thank you for sharing your tremendous heart energy to uplift the world. My “plan” is to contribute to this effort as well as I can, starting today. Here is a great quote I found on the web site of a wonderful yoga teacher named Lisa Schrempp, who is doing her part to bring light & healing to the world through her Project 108 (check out her site at lisaschrempp.com): “If we just look away from violence without so much as sending a blessing out, the path of unkindness remains unobstructed. However, by raising awareness, sending light & love, and also by actively and vocally being a part of change, the patterns of violence can be shifted.” -Author Unknown

Don’t get me wrong, i think it’s a great idea, but don’t you think that advices as “Don’t judge”, “make a difference” etc are way too vague ? I mean, i don’t know if the entire book is made of sentences like these, but they are quite obvious, and idealize a behaviour that is actually far from reality…

As an instance : “Say what you mean” To whom ? About what ? Should i tell the truth to the people i hate ? Or stop embellishthe truth to the people i love and want to protect ? Nope.

We can’t just wake up one day, and say to ourselves : “Hey, I’m going to be fair today !”

On the other hand, as your post are always really subtle and truthful, i hope you’ll succeed in giving more sense to this kind of quotes ;)

Anyway, keep blogging, your posts are awesome.

(Please pardon my English, I don’t have many occasions to pratice here in Paris)

Leslie, Some things are open to interpretation depending on your situation, environment, people in your life…
Some things are obvious but they still need to be mentioned and reinforced so that we remember to manifest them in our interactions and behaviour.
I like non-specific suggestions; it gives me the freedom and flexibility to apply it to the degree and depth that I want to or am comfortable with…
